a struggle ensued and espinoza allegedly trying to grab the gun. a girlfriend distracted the officer and espinoza got away. a santa clara man accused of threatening the life of a state senator will be arraigned in superior court today. police bomb experts continue to search everett basham's home. they previously found guns and explosive materials inside the home but yesterday they found some completed explosive devices. >> unlike the substances they found earlier in the investigation, which were incomplete, they were in the process of being completed and finished, these actual items were complete and they were ready to use. >> a police bomb unit from neighboring san jose carefully removed those devices and drove them to a separate location to be detonated. they were transported in a trailer specifically designed to withstand an explosion. and the search at basham's home began on tuesday when he

dice at hillside elementary school in san leandro just before 9:00 at night when shots rang out. foster's mother believes he knew the killer. >> please, turn yourself in because my baby did not deserve that. he didn't deserve it at all. >> hillside elementary was closed yesterday as investigators scoured the school grounds for clues and so far they have no motive and no suspects. the school will be open back again today. today vouchers can be redeemed for cash from a recent gun buy-back in marin county. last month the county collected more than 800 guns and the money set aside ran out in 90 minutes. now the county has more funds to pay for $70,000 worth of vouchers that were issued and the vouchers can be redeemed today starting at 11 a.m. at the showcase theater at marin county civic center. and delays are expected to be longer than usual this weekend at the san francisco airport because of an ongoing construction project to bring the runways up to federal

an amazing sight at seaworld in san diego, a whale giving birth at shamu stadium yesterday. she went through an hour of labor before delivering the calf, which weighs about 350 pounds at 7 feet long. it swam to the surface to take its first breath. we don't know the gender. but whatever it is, it's

healthy and swimming fine. >> that's good. five people are in the hospital after a police chase in downtown san francisco that ended with a crash and gunfire. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in san francisco this morning with an update. >> reporter: good morning. turned into a wild chase at fifth and mission, where it all ended last night. but take a look at the video we shot just a few hours ago. starting at 9:15, a car was stolen and an unmarked police car spotted the car at market and 8th, followed it to eddy street where marked cars joined in the chase. put down some spike strips. the driver of the stolen black town car drove up on the sidewalk to avoid the spike strips and that is when an officer started shooting at the car. at fifth and mission it hit a

an above-average day. lots of sunshine as this ridge of high pressure kind of peaking today and then i think into the weekend it will weekend. that means we'll see a little cooler air moving onshore but plenty of sunshine. these temperatures running well above the average into the afternoon. then we have major changes in the next five to seven days. around the state you'll see some 70s in the central valley. 71 fresno. 70 degrees in sacramento. 62 in yosemite and 52 degrees in lake tahoe. as you head around the bay today, you will see a lot of yellow on the screen. those are 70s in the san jose, 70 fremont, 65 pacifica, 70 hayward. east bay temperatures should be nice too. 60s and low 70s this afternoon. and inside the bay going to be spectacular with those down slope winds. 71 degrees in oakland. 69 in san francisco. and 70 degrees in santa rosa. next couple of days temperatures cool off slightly tomorrow. i think more so on sunday but then as we get into next week the clouds begin to gather. looks like rain is more likely on tuesday. showers possible into wednesday and then maybe more showers on

this is in cupertino, northbound 280 to southbound 85. they have been closing ramps overnight for a while. elsewhere silicon valley commute westbound 237 off to a great start and mass transit still on time. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. investigators have positively identified the remains of christopher dorner, the former los angeles police officer linked to four murders in southern california. the identification was made official yesterday with the help of dental records. law enforcement cornered him in a cabin on tuesday in san bernardino mountains and it later caught on fire. his ex-girlfriend said the killings were inexcusable. >> i don't think in any way justifiable. someone going out and killing anyone because they are stressed out at work. there are ways and outlets of releasing stress and chris unfortunately was one of those people he bottled up his emotions and wasn't very good at expressing himself. >> the exact cause of his death hasn't been determined yet.

meanwhile, irvine police told the "orange county register" that dorner did research on an engaged couple prior to killing them. now, airbus is saying no to the type of batteries linked to problems with the boeing 787. >> the european airplane company is dropping those lithium ion batteries from its new dreamliner airplane. airbus is reverting to the nickel cadmium batteries and its new wide bodied jet to make its first flight later this year. the 787 is out of service because of the widespread battery problems. on capitol hill, a republican filibuster has stalled a senate vote on whether to confirm chuck hagel as the next secretary of defense. the senate was two votes short of the 60 needed to move his nomination forward. republicans say they are seeking a delay to look more closely at hagel, a republican ex-senator. others say they want more information from the white house about the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. same-sex marriage is a step closer to legalization in the state of illinois. they are senate approved it

yesterday. the bill now will head to the statehouse where it could face a tougher battle. governor pat quinn has vowed to sign it if it ever reaches his desk. shocking but true, california's parks and rec department doesn't know how much it costs to operate each of its state parks. according to a new audit, park officials have no idea how much the state would have saved by closing 70 parks last year. its part of an investigation into $54 million found hidden last summer in two special funds. the money had been there for a decade. 4:49 now. toyota will pay millions all part of a settlement for its safety recalls. the japanese automaker will pay $29 million to 29 states in america sanaa he would. state attorneys general had sued the company. toyota recalled some 14 million vehicles in 2009 and 2010 for acceleration without warning. toyota also promised to deal more quickly with their customer complaints. investors continue to have faith in their 401(k)

retirement funds. fidelity investments says 401(k) balances reached record highs last year with an average balance of just over $77,000. the stock market gains accounted for about two-thirds of that increase. the rest came from workers increasing their 401(k) contributions. home prices are on the rise in the bay area. the median price single-family home is up to $435,000 in the bay area. and that's up more than 24% in the last year. alameda county had the biggest gains at 29.2% followed by santa clara county at 29.1. millionaires momentum going on in the tahoe area. they are buying houses up there. brokers with chase international say pending sales in incline village have tripled in the past 90 days compared to this same time last year. realtors haven't seen a house worth at least $20 million sales since 2008 and now three in that price range have sold in the last three months. and they say homes around $10

chelyabinsk region 900 miles east of moscow in the mostly rural ural notice. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran reports on that and another big rock flying towards earth. wild night. >> reporter: that's right. this asteroid or this asteroid also comes on the same day and now researchers are trying to see if there is a link between the two of them. it's known as 2012-da14. researchers hope this asteroid can help them learn to avoid collisions with larger ones which could destroy the earth. nasa says this asteroid will move quickly and past us. as you said, 500 people are hurt in the meteor that exploded over russia. most of them were cut by glass broken by the shockwaves. >> an object the size of the house or car cannot be seen by telescopes and they creep up right behind you and catch you off guard. >> reporter: this meteor led
